Is your homepage ‘me, me, me …. or do you put your client’s needs first?

If you have done any research at all on Internet Marketing and how to create effective websites then you will probably have come across advice that tells you not to make your home page all about you.

Almost every day I come across websites that start something like … “Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Elsie Bloggs and I ……..” and here they often list their passions, qualifications and reasons for being in business”. Whilst this is all very nice and friendly, unfortunately it’s not the best way to instantly engage your web visitors and make them desperate to read more!

If you have come across this advise before and ignored it or you’ve never come across this advice at all then allow me to explain why putting your client’s needs first can only be win, win, win.

Imagine you are speaking to a prospective client for the first time, ideally you want to start by building rapport with them and then by qualifying them – i.e. ensuring that they are the right client for you and that you can actually help them with an appropriate solution. And of course you won’t find out this information by immediately launching into a little speech about you and your business, and it’s most definitely not a great way to build rapport!

And the same principle applies online too. When people are looking for help with something they are first and foremost interested in themselves and their problem, and when they land on your website they too will be doing a little qualifying process of their own to find out very quickly whether you understand their problem or need and can offer them the kind of solution they are looking for.

And so what you really want is for them to do is metaphorically put their hands up and say “YES! that’s me, that’s exactly like me; that’s how I feel/think/behave – tell me more”! This way you have very quickly built rapport with them and engaged them enough to stay on your site.

Just a quick note though, this is MUCH easier to do when you have a clearly defined niche and well-structured website. See my recent blog on the benefits of having a niche.

Of course your prospects will want to know all about you at some point - and that’s exactly what your ‘about me’ page is for.
