Does having a niche limit you?

The great debate, particularly among service professionals is whether or not you really need a niche. I’ve heard people say that they think it limits them; limits what they can do and who they can work with. My experience as a marketer and a coach is that having a clearly defined niche positions you and actually makes marketing your business easier not harder. And of course there’s nothing to stop you having more than one niche as long as you treat each one as a separate marketing campaign. Equally if someone outside of your defined niche wants to work with you, you’re free to do that if you choose.

So, just what are the benefits of having a clearly defined niche?:

  • It ensures you stand out as the expert in your field; and we know that generally people like and are attracted to experts
  • People remember experts more easily
  • People are more likely to refer/recommend experts or those with a specific niche, because they remember more clearly what they do and who they do it for!
  • Marketing is easier (Oh yes!!!) – it doesn’t limit you it positions you!
  • It keeps you focused – look what happens to certain retailers when they lose focus and try to be all things to all folk
  • Publicity is easier to get – journalists and the media love experts too and when they look online they will search for specific expertise
  • You can have more than one niche and as long as you’re prepared to put in the time and effort marketing them!

Who do you think of as experts in areas such as property development, decorating your house, looking 10 years younger, personal development …… What makes you remember specific people within their field? And equally what makes you remember and refer someone?

What’s your experience; does having a clearly defined niche (or two) work for you?

On my How to turn your website into a Client Magnet workshop I will show you how to design your website to ensure you stand out as the expert your field!
